ATTENTION ACADIANA HOME BAKERS:
The first annual Bake Me Home bake off and fair is on Friday, November 8 at 5 pm at Vermilionville! Here are the details:
What’s considered a home baker? Home bakers include any amateur or hobby bakers as well as bakers who run a small home based business. All baked goods must be prepared in a home kitchen.
What categories are there? Four categories will be judged: Cakes & Pies, Cookies & Bars, Breads, Rolls & Muffins, and Junior Division for bakers 12 and under. A first, second, and third place will be awarded in each division. A special “People’s Choice” award will also be decided by the ticket holders from all entries.
What do I get if I win? Each level winners will receive a ribbon and an event apron. You’ll ALSO receive bragging rights that you won in the first annual Bake Me Home event, AND you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you shared your talent so that ARCH can continue to help people in housing crises 💚
How many categories can I enter? Each baker may enter multiple categories but can only enter one item in each category.
How much does it cost to register? We are charging a $10 fee for each item entered - mainly, to ensure that people are committed when they register.
What are the rules around what I bake? Entries must be homemade and made from scratch. Any box mixes can be used only as an ingredient, but must be enhanced or altered in a significant way, and not presented as the box mix finished product. A full ingredient list (not the recipe!) must also be provided to the judges and to the ticket holders upon request. Also, please no refrigerated items. It’s a long night and you won’t have access to a fridge.
How will my baked items be judged? Entries will be judged on taste, texture, creativity (of ingredients), and overall appearance. Please note that “appearance” refers to how appetizing and appropriate an item appears, and NOT based on decoration or decor.
How much do I need to make? This sounds like a lot. ·Not really! Contestants must provide baked items to the judges. Please submit either an entire cake/pie (no less than 8”) or a loaf of bread (no less than 9”x5”), or one dozen of the baked item (i.e. cookies, muffins, rolls) on a disposable plate or in a disposable bag or box. Also, bakers must provide up to 200 “bites” or “samples” for the general public. These samples should be no more than two bites. Baker will be notified on Monday, November 4th of the amount of bites needed based on ticket sales. Sample serving vessels will be provided by ARCH on the day of the bake off. We’re making this as easy for the bakers to participate as possible!
What will happen the night of the event? Setup will be from 4 pm to 5 pm. Judging will begin at 5 pm. Bakers will provide samples and chat with the general public 5 pm to 7 pm. Awards will be presented at 7:30 pm. There will also be food and drinks provided by Vermilionville, live music, and games for kids.
Can I sell any items? Yes! You may also bring additional baked items to sell to the ticket holders. Please note that you will need to provide your own method of collecting payment such as Venmo, a Square, etc.
Do I have to bring a table or tent? Nope. We are providing tables and we will be indoors. We do ask that you provide a table covering and any other table decor or signage that you’d like to share.
What if I don’t want to do this by myself? You can register as a team if you’d like, but you’ll have to decide as a team who gets to keep the award!
How long do I have to decide? Regsitration is now closed, but looking forward to having you next year!
This is great! How do I register? Check back in 2025!
